PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING
Simon Brooks, Principal
“‘Every child deserves the champion, an adult who will never give up on them, who understands the power of connection, and insists that they become the best that they can possibly be.’”
- Rita Pearson, TED Talk, 2013
The educational research is very clear: there is nothing that has more impact on the life and learning of a child than positive relationships.
It is with this theme in mind that I reflect on another awesome week at AISM…
Last weekend we hosted a brand new extravaganza of an event: the Senior School Dance. What a wonderful evening this was. Themed Vintage Hollywood, the Dance took place from 7pm to midnight and was an exciting opportunity for our young people to dress up, enjoy some amazing food, and dance!
The late, great Sir Ken Robinson once wrote that ‘Dance - and physical activity - should have the same status in schools as Maths, Science and Language’, and it was clear to see why on Saturday night. The sense of community and togetherness amongst our young people was palpable. What an amazing opportunity for our students to see each other in different ways and build great relationships. I offer my thanks to Mr. Webster and Ms. Ritchie for coordinating the event and to all of our amazing teachers who gave their time for the benefit of our young people: an amazing opportunity to build on the already rich and meaningful relationships they have with our students.
The Senior School Dance was just the beginning of an awesome week of relationship-building. Week 7 was also our annual Cross Country week! My thanks go to Mr. Ivan Yoong, Mr. Dale Wells, our PDHPE team and to all our teachers for their efforts in making this another wonderful success. On Wednesday, our older MSS students took to the roads around the school for a longer run of 4km, and on Friday our JS students ran either 1km or 1.5km depending on their age. It was also fantastic to see our ELC learners challenged by a superb assault course, in the same week where they had already inspired us with their amazing Fashion Show.
Coming back to relationships, it was great to see the camaraderie on display during Cross Country. I was delighted to witness once again just how supportive our students are - how they cheer one another on, and celebrate each other’s successes. And how about our House Chants in both the Junior School and Middle & Senior School? How amazing it was to see them bonding as a team and developing powerful relationships, lasting connection and community spirit.
To top off the week in style, we were also delighted to host our wonderful Parents’ Breakfast on Friday morning. My thanks as always go to our amazing PTC team for organising this event and for all of their ongoing efforts. It was a joy to see so many of our families enjoying our Parents’ Breakfast together this week! Eating together as a family is, of course, another great opportunity to build powerful relationships. In fact, there is an entire organisation called The Family Dinner Project devoted to popularising the importance of family dinners, which also provides some interesting resources to stimulate richer talk at the dinner table.
I will end this week’s article with my top tip for everyone interested in building powerful relationships with our children and young people, so that they feel known, valued and respected.
As Vivian Paley wrote in 1986, ‘The key is curiosity. As we seek to learn more about a child, we demonstrate the acts of observing, listening, questioning, and wondering. When we are curious about a child’s words and our responses to those words, the child feels respected. The child is respected’.
My thanks to everyone in our community for a wonderful week of relationship-building and I wish you a delightful weekend ahead.

AISM Book Week Extravaganza!
Ms. Jaeshinthaa Kaur Uppal And Ms. Syakila Shaari, AISM Library Team
We are thrilled to recap the incredible week of literary celebration that was AISM Book Week! From vibrant costumes to engaging author sessions, and heartwarming acts of kindness, the week was an absolute whirlwind of literary delight. Let's dive into the memorable highlights that made this event truly exceptional.
Book Parade: Unleashing the Magic of Imagination!
The AISM Book Parade was a sight to behold as our creative students brought their favourite book characters to life. From swashbuckling pirates to enchanting princesses, the campus was buzzing with the energy of beloved literary figures. The enthusiasm was infectious, and it was heartwarming to witness parents joining in on the fun by attending and supporting the parade.
An Author's Insight: Malcolm Mejin
The highlight of the week was undoubtedly the visit by esteemed author Malcolm Mejin. With a wealth of storytelling wisdom, Malcolm engaged the Upper Junior School students in an interactive session that left them spellbound. His anecdotes, writing tips, and insights into the world of literature left a lasting impression on both students and teachers alike.
Junior School Afternoon Trivia: Where Knowledge Meets Fun!
Knowledge was put to the test during the Junior School Afternoon Trivia, hosted by none other than our Year 5 students. The impressive range of book-related questions showcased the depth of knowledge our young readers had acquired from their shared class readings. The event was a testament to the power of collaborative learning and the joy of literary exploration.
Giving Back Through Books: Donation for CHIN Organisation
The generosity of our AISM community shone brightly as parents came together to make a difference. The Books Donation for the CHIN Organisation was a heartwarming gesture, reflecting the spirit of compassion and empathy. Through this initiative, the gift of reading will reach even more hearts, fostering a love for books and learning.
Chilling Success: Icy Poles Fundraising Drive for CHIN Organisation
As temperatures soared, so did the success of the Icy Poles Fundraising Drive. With unwavering support from both students and staff, the drive was a resounding success in raising funds for the CHIN Organisation. It was heartening to witness our community uniting for a common cause, making a meaningful impact beyond the school walls. In conclusion, AISM Book Week was a resounding success, highlighting the magic of literature and the power of community. Through colourful costumes, engaging author sessions, shared knowledge, and acts of generosity, our students showcased the values of creativity, curiosity, and compassion that we hold dear at AISM. We extend our heartfelt gratitude to all who contributed to making this week unforgettable.
Until next time, keep turning those pages and embracing the adventures that books bring to life!

Year 3 Highlights: Creativity, Dance and Design!
Mr Jeremy Cox, Year 3 Teacher
T-Shirt Printing Extravaganza!
Our talented Year 3 students embarked on an exciting journey of creativity, starting with brainstorming ideas for their very own t-shirt designs. Armed with paper, pencils and their endless imagination, they sketched out their designs. Following this, they meticulously cut out stencils from card and then began the screen printing process. The results? Stunningly unique t-shirts that each student proudly showcased during our recent assembly.
"Shake It Off" with Year 3!
If you were present at the assembly hosted by Year 3, you would undoubtedly remember the energetic dance number we put up to Taylor Swift's 'Shake It Off'. With many hours of practice, our students danced their hearts out, and their performance was nothing short of spectacular. It was a testament to their dedication and teamwork. For those who missed it, these photos will give you a sneak peek into our fun routine!
Inquiry into 'Changing Cities'
This term, the focus for our Inquiry has been on 'Changing Cities'. Diving deep into the intricacies of urban landscapes, our students have been researching what constitutes a city, understanding its pivotal features and observing how cities evolve over time. This exploration inspired them to design their unique cities, ensuring they incorporated essential city elements. Currently, they are taking their designs to the next level by bringing them to life in Minecraft Education. We cannot wait to see their digital cityscapes!
It has been a truly enriching and fun-filled time in Year 3. A big shout out to our students for their enthusiasm, creativity and hard work. Stay tuned for more exciting updates in our next newsletter!
Book Week Highlights: The Power of the Student Learning Council at AISM
Mr Jeremy Cox, Year 3 Teacher
As many are aware, AISM holds the distinction of being the world's first Visible Learning School and continues to pave the way for Visible Learning Schools globally. Concurrently, we take pride in our evolving practices in Visible Thinking and our association with Harvard University's Project Zero. One initiative that underscores our leadership in Visible Learning and Thinking is the formation of the Student Learning Council (SLC) and its chosen Ambassadors. The harmony of Visible Learning and Visible Thinking was beautifully showcased at the commencement of Book Week, all thanks to the commendable efforts of our SLC and its dedicated Ambassadors.
A Brief on Visible Learning and Visible Thinking Routines
At its core, Visible Learning zeroes in on discerning the most impactful strategies for student learning, allowing educators to hone their instruction methods. In parallel, Visible Thinking encourages students to externalise and discuss their cognitive journey, enhancing their depth of understanding. Thinking Routines, such as ‘See, Think, Wonder’, are integral tools that streamline this reflective practice.
Spotlight on Book Week Activities
Kicking off Book Week, our Ambassadors from the SLC led the inaugural session, setting the tone for a week of deep engagement and reflection.
For the Early Learning Centre, Foundation, Years 1 and 2: ‘See, Think, Wonder’ was front and centre. As students immersed themselves in stories, they delved into illustrations, verbalised their perceptions and posed intriguing questions. Their connection with the stories was further solidified through a ‘Story Illustration.’
Years 3 to 5 embarked on a journey with ‘See, Think, Wonder’ but extended their exploration. Post the story immersion, they synthesised their narratives using the ‘Headlines’ routine, crafting headlines that resonated with the essence of the stories.
Wrapping Up
Our heartfelt thanks go to our SLC Ambassadors for their exemplary leadership in initiating the week and to all students for their vibrant participation. As you can see from the photographs, the enthusiasm and deep reflection showcased by our students is evident, a testament to our ongoing commitment to nurturing not just learners, but discerning thinkers.

Une Partie De Pétanque
Ms Stephanie Rajani, MSS French Teacher
As part of their French class's cultural learning, Middle school students had the opportunity to explore the game of pétanque. This traditional French game, requiring precision and concentration, allowed students to have a unique immersive cultural experience.
Played with steel balls called boules, the objective is to throw them as close as possible to a smaller wooden target known as le cochonnet or the jack. The art lies not only in precision but also strategy, as players must strategise each throw to outmanoeuvre opponents.
Students gained a deeper understanding of France's cultural richness by playing the game and enabled them to connect with French traditions in a fun and educational way.
French Teachers’ Meetup at UPM
Ms Stephanie Rajani, MSS French Teacher
Last weekend, French teachers from all around Malaysia, Indonesia and Cambodia met up for 2 days at University Putra Malaysia (UPM) to talk and share ideas on how to innovate language lessons using AI and other teaching methodologies. Rather than replacing the human touch, AI was positioned as a complementary resource, enhancing lesson plans and offering personalised guidance to learners. Throughout the event, French teachers got acquainted with each other and exchanged various teaching ideas and experiences. It was a very strange feeling at first to only speak French in Malaysia to Malaysians, however, we felt straight away connected to each other through the language. A big thank you to UPM and the French Embassy for organising and hosting this event.
AISM Students Tackling Trash
Ms Stephanie Rajani, MSS French Teacher
Recently, Green Team members had the opportunity to visit a local recycling centre with the Tzu Chi organization. Volunteering in the morning, especially on weekends, isn’t always a simple task. Overcoming the gravitational pull that anchors me snugly in bed, I managed to leave the comfort of home by 9.00am. It was surprising that the recycling centre blended into the surrounding village rather than being an isolated entity. We completed a variety of exercises by following instructions given by Tzu Chi members. These encompassed waste sorting, which is the separating of garbage into separate categories and extracting electric wires from various gadgets such as speakers. These exercises have been wonderful learning experiences, allowing us to gain and use a wide range of practical skills. However, beyond the acquisition of skills, the activities provided us with a chance to delve into the core principles of zero waste: a strategy that includes refuse, reduce, reuse, repair, and, as a last resort, recycle. They raised the concern that people are jumping straight to the recycling step without taking other steps into account. They undermine the idea that recycling should be considered a last option after trying all other steps. In pursuit of these objectives, I recognize the need for preliminary practices. This has been a nice reminder of how our community members inspire others to take on their responsibilities, contributing to a sustainable AISM.

Introducing the 2023 Learning Ambassador Positions for Middle & Senior School
We are proud to announce the MSS Learning Ambassadors for 2023. Our Learning Ambassadors program aims to create a network of students who are passionate about helping their peers succeed academically and socially. These ambassadors will serve as mentors, role models, and resources for their fellow classmates. The program's core objective is to promote a positive and inclusive learning environment where students feel empowered and encouraged to reach their full potential. We believe that students can have a profound impact on each other's learning journey, and the Learning Ambassadors program presents an excellent opportunity to harness this potential. By supporting one another, students can develop essential leadership skills, improve their communication abilities, and build a sense of community within the school. Our Learning Ambassadors have been nominated by their teachers and will represent all homerooms from Years 6 to 11.
A Night of Glitz and Glamour: Senior School Dance Recap
Dance Committee, Stage 5 Pastoral Coordinator
AISM’s Black Box Theatre was transformed into a Vintage Hollywood spectacle on Saturday, August 26, as students from Years 9 to 12 gathered for the Senior School Dance. The event, themed "Vintage Hollywood", ran from 7pm to midnight and was an evening to remember.
Decked out in elegant Hollywood-inspired attire, the students truly embraced the theme, adding a touch of old-school glamour to the night. Laughter, camaraderie, and a shared sense of excitement filled the air, making it a truly magical experience.
The event's inclusivity was a highlight, with students from all backgrounds and year levels coming together to dance and celebrate. The delicious spread, featuring tacos, burger sliders, pani puri, and a chocolate fountain, delighted everyone's taste buds and added to the festive atmosphere.
The music set the stage for an enchanting night, with students dancing beneath mesmerising lights. Awards were a key part of the evening, recognizing outstanding participants. Samuel Kerr (10G) and Robiin Smith (11G) walked away with the “Best Dressed” titles, while Imad Abdullah (11G) was crowned the “Life of the Party”. James Woo (11G) and Annabelle Au (11W) were named “Dance King” and “Dance Queen”, respectively, while the “Couple of the Dance” award went to Melynna Hamzah (11W) and Aaryan Singam (10G).
The success of the event was a result of dedicated teamwork involving leaders, teachers, parents, and students and the organisers would like to extend their thanks to all who supported and contributed to the Senior School Dance and Dance fundraising events. The night proved that collective efforts can turn dreams into reality and memories that will last a lifetime.

Care Movement: Care for the World
Mr Laurent Epetahui
How can we create a space for biodiversity to exist in a space that once was bare?
“The Green Sustainable Education”program is offering us a few steps to understand the “Life cycle of things.”
MSS: Every week, during recess, the students collect paper from classes and bring them to the Organic Recycling Centre. They are stored in tanks and later on this paper is given to our good little friends, the red worms and bugs to compost. That is the first step, collecting the paper.
The next step is to put the paper and other bio-organic materials into our Biodegradable Transformer Unit, BTU. Then, the red worms will transform them into a very rich organic vermicompost or organic fertilizer. We have here our volunteers who are working at our ORS, feeding the red worms.
The students took one green/red Ti plant each and went to plant them into a dedicated plot for this term. Very soon we will see these Ti plants growing alongside Brazilian spinach, Mexican mint, lemongrass, chili plant, mango trees etc.
The main purpose here is to create a space that will be full of life and develop a biodiverse little sanctuary which we can visit in the near future.
Next phase: We will be using natural organic compost to fill up our garden beds. Happy Living Campus!
GO GREEN, GO SUSTAINABLE, THINK GREEN AND ACT GREEN
