PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING
Simon Brooks, Principal
“Society is unity in diversity”
- George Herbert Mead
This week saw AISM transform into a hub of excitement, cultural immersion and experiential learning as our community marked and celebrated International Week and International Day.
International Day 2023 was an incredible showcase of the rich tapestry of cultures that make our community the special, vibrant and unique place that it is. This year’s festivities took the AISM community on a journey around the globe, highlighting the diversity and richness of our community’s cultural backgrounds.
From the striking array of traditional costumes worn with pride, to the colourful array of flags representing the nations within our community, it was a visual feast representing the unique features of our community.
We were honoured to have Mr Simon Fellows, the Acting Australian High Commissioner to Malaysia, deliver an insightful keynote address. This was followed by captivating performances from both staff and students alike, including the highly energetic Scottish Reel, the expressive and powerful Haka, an amazing rendition of the traditional Wau Bulan by the school choir and a fun teachers’ performance that showcased some fancy footwork accompanied by music from different parts of the world. The flag parade, an annual symbolic tradition, was, as always, a key highlight of International Day and it was truly amazing to see our student body proudly represent 40 different countries .
As part of the day’s celebrations, students also went on a trip around the world as they engaged with different cultural activities, which allowed them to experience cuisine, sports, dance and art from an array of different nations. The Food Fair, organised and facilitated by the PTC, was an especially popular stop on the day’s voyage, offering all in attendance mouth-watering opportunities to sample and savour culinary delights from around the globe.
International Day has always held a special place in AISM hearts and it is a much anticipated day on the school calendar. This year was no exception. Our community's strength lies in our unity and cohesion, which was beautifully demonstrated today as all members of the AISM family came together with a shared vision to celebrate our diversity and foster authentic intercultural connections.
International Day at AISM has always been more than just a celebration; it is a testament to our commitment to fostering empathy, understanding, appreciation and respect for each other’s backgrounds and experiences. It’s a meaningful reminder that the beauty of the world truly lies in the diversity of its people.
I will conclude with two paragraphs from my welcoming speech as part of opening ceremony today:
International Day is about so much more than those things that make us different. It’s also about what brings us together. There’s an old Kenyan proverb that I’ve always loved - ‘sticks in a bundle are unbreakable’. One twig, however beautiful, is easily snapped! But bring the sticks together, 1 stick, 2 sticks, 3 sticks… 40 sticks - and now you have something pretty much unbreakable! Today we celebrate the fact that as a community we are so much more than the sum of our parts. Today we celebrate unity in diversity.
And what is it that brings us together at AISM? I believe it is our shared values that make us unique. We are a kind school. We treat everyone we meet with dignity and respect, whatever their position in life. We care for ourselves, we care for others, we care for our world. We delight in the successes and achievements of our friends. We listen to each other. We celebrate the amazing opportunity we have here to think, to learn, and to excel. We are committed to our Australian values, such as inclusion, mateship, integrity, and a fair go for all. We do our best to find joy in everything we do!
Congratulations to all on the success of the 2023 International Day. I extend my sincere thanks and appreciation to all those involved in making today the wonderful day that it was, and wish you an enjoyable and relaxing school holiday!
JUNIOR SCHOOL
Michelle Chaplin, Head of Junior School
Term 3 has given us much to celebrate in the Junior School: our strong academic achievements, our sporting and musical successes, and our amazing community events that bring us all together.
I am often asked “What makes our school so special?” and “Why choose AISM?” and my ready response has always been quite simple - if you want to experience the joy of everyday learning, experience truly feeling a part of something wonderful and grow to be the best version of yourself - then AISM is the school for you! Every student is a champion at AISM!
In growing our Junior School, and opening up new classes for 2024, I would encourage families with siblings to enrol now to secure your spot. I see little people - 3 and 4 years old ready to start next year - and now is the time to register. Are you unnecessarily juggling 2 schools? Now is the time to bring the whole family to AISM.
Our Junior School is filling fast and we’re excited to be that little bit bigger in 2024! A thought for us all.
“Keep going, keep growing, keep glowing and keep soaring ”

International Week at AISM
Mrs Gayatri Unsworth, Head of Language Acquisition
The AISM Breezeway was converted into a festive cultural hub this week as MSS students partook in a plethora of arts, crafts, culinary and sporting experiences from around the world. In addition to daily trivia challenges, which happened during Homeroom and challenged students on how quickly they could show off their knowledge of the world in exchange for delicious prizes, our Year 6 to Year 12 learners had plenty of activities to choose from during lunch each day from Monday to Thursday.
The week kicked off with 3D Paper World Landmark building and traditional Malaysian games such as Batu Seremban and Congkak. Many students meticulously cut-out and constructed well-known structures such as the Eiffel Tower and the Tower Bridge, whilst their peers tried out their hands at the various games on offer.
On Tuesday, students demonstrated their artistic prowess as they engaged in colouring Chinese Opera Masks and Ketupat weaving. Many also showed off their fancy footwork as they challenged their peers to a game of Jianzi (a traditional Chinese game involving shuttlecock kicking).
A South African experience was all the rage on Wednesday as lively music, an African animal matching activity and biltong sampling drew in the crowds. On Thursday, an Around The World quiz put students’ general knowledge under the pump and took them on a whirlwind tour of the globe, marking a very successful International Week, which culminated in the highlight of the 2023 AISM calendar, International Day.
IESC Graduation, Term 3 2023
Mrs Gayatri Unsworth, Head of Language Acquisition Faculty

TEG Mandarin Teach Meet
Ms Hor Kai Lin, MSS Chinese Teacher
Last Friday, Ms. Hor Kai Lin, the Chinese teacher at AISM, was invited to participate in a Taylor’s Education Group (TEG) Mandarin Teach Meet held at Taylor’s International School Puchong. The event brought together approximately 10 Mandarin teachers from junior and middle schools under the TEG umbrella.
During the event, the teachers had the opportunity to get acquainted with one another and exchange various teaching ideas and experiences. They shared their approaches to teaching Chinese and discussed teaching resources and experiences based on their students' backgrounds and proficiency levels.
The challenges related to Mandarin teaching and learning were also discussed in depth, with teachers sharing their experiences and ideas. Additionally, they explored the use of cultural resources that could enhance their classes and benefit the school as a whole.
Mooncake making
Ms Hor Kai Lin, MSS Chinese Teacher
At the end of term three, the Chinese classroom embarked on a culinary adventure in preparation for the upcoming Mid Autumn Festival, which falls at the end of September. To explore the legend of the Mid Autumn Festival, students watched videos and discussed the stories. Additionally, they had a Mid Autumn Festival quiz in the class.
Most of the students had previously tasted mooncakes available in the market. To provide students with an opportunity to make their own mooncakes, Ms. Hor Kai Lin assisted in preparing the ingredients, while the students made their own snow skin mooncakes with lotus or red bean paste. Some students also shared their Mid Autumn Festival celebrations at home, such as participating in lantern parades, offering prayers to the moon, and enjoying different varieties of mooncakes.
Making mooncakes was not only a new experience for some students but also their first taste of homemade mooncakes. Through this activity, students learned that the act of sharing and eating round mooncakes among family members signifies the completeness and unity of families. In Chinese culture, the round shape symbolises completeness and reunion.
