PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

Simon Brooks, Principal

“If you want to go quickly, go alone. If you want to go far, go together” – African Proverb

As I write, I have just returned to my office after our (now annual!) Christmas Singalong event in the Auditorium, and what an event it was!

In many ways this event symbolises so much about what makes AISM special.

Our children and young people were amazing. It was so awesome to see the confidence emanating from our very youngest students as they climbed up onto the stage and sang their hearts out. It was also lovely to hear our MSS students joining in as well and delivering some fantastic Christmas classics!

As I looked out into the audience, I was delighted to see so many members of our community singing along, candles raised aloft, dancing, cheering, supporting the performers and really enjoying the community feel.

Community is just one of the many things that makes AISM feel special. When I show guests around our school, over and over again they’ll comment on how this place feels different to other schools - this place feels like a family.

Tonight was a really wonderful example of the good humour and strong ties that are at the heart of AISM. I would like to thank everyone involved, with particular thanks to all of our staff in attendance, Mr Ervin for the sound, Mr Fisher and Ms Taylor for the music, Mr Unsworth and Ms Janett for their organisation, Mr Brown and Ms McNarn for their outstanding hosting schools, our community for coming, and to our young performers for being so awesome!

Have a wonderful weekend everybody.

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Michelle Chaplin, Head of Junior School

If you can’t fly then run, if you can’t run then walk, if you can’t walk then crawl, but whatever you do you have to keep moving forward - Martin Luther King

Some of you may remember this quote from this time last year when we reflected on all that had occurred in 2022 - and here we are in 2023 and we can definitely say we have taken some great strides forward - as promised!

AISM has lived up the ideals of Martin Luther King - In the Junior School we have academically flown to new heights - run to embrace new opportunities - walked with steps of joy through the many experiences that come with life at AISM and I believe we are crawling to the end of 2023 after a year of engagement, huge achievements and positive energy.

I am in awe of all that we have accomplished and super excited for what that means for 2024 - yes - fasten your seat belts - there is no slowing down in the Junior School - already we are in planning meetings for camps, sports, excursions and so much more!

The Junior School staff are amazing - an incredible band of passionate educators who care deeply for all the students in the Junior School - from the moment we greet them in the Breezeway to the time when we wave them off into their cars - our students are nurtured and cared for to ensure they are the best version of themselves, achieve their goals and have the best day ever!

My congratulations and thanks to each staff member for being the best they can be and for going the extra mile!

This year we farewell the following staff as they head to further adventures - Mr Matthew Brown, Mr Nicholas Oliver and Ms Auni Salahuddin. We wish them safe travels and know that they will take the spirit of AISM with them as they continue their journey.

The highlights of 2023 are captured in our Yearbook which is available online for ordering - I encourage all our parents to relax and read through the many accomplishments of our students and our community from ELC through to Year 12!

2023 has been a memorable year on so many fronts - from musicals to sporting achievements, exciting CCAs to excellent academic results. Congratulations to our community - a year of great partnerships as we have grown in number, grown in capability and grown as a school to meet the needs of all our students and community.

In appreciation for a wonderful community and a fabulous year of 2023 at AISM, I thank all our families for all you give to our community and our school - AISM!

Enjoy the break - travel safe - read a good book - watch a funny movie - play a family board game or dance to your favourite song…

Refresh, Revive and Re-energise - ready for 2024!

Role-Play, Teamwork, and Independence: Year 4s Day at Kidzania!

Mr Oliver and Ms Auni, Year 4 Classroom Teachers

We are excited to share the fun-filled moments from our Year 4 excursion to Kidzania! It was a day where our students embraced adventure, independence, and the joy of discovery in a vibrant and interactive environment.

  1. Role-Playing Fun: The highlight of our day was undoubtedly the role-playing activities. Our students had the opportunity to dive into various roles, transforming into enthusiastic chefs, caring veterinarians, and even intrepid pilots! Watching them engage in these roles was a delight, as they explored and enjoyed the magic of different professions.
  2. Celebrating Teamwork: It was heartwarming to see the children demonstrate outstanding teamwork. Whether they were collaborating in a mock construction site or assisting each other in the culinary zone, their spirit of cooperation and mutual support was evident. They truly exemplified the power of working together.
  3. A Sense of Independence: Kidzania provided a unique opportunity for our students to experience a sense of independence. They made choices, tackled tasks, and explored this mini-city with a sense of ownership and responsibility. This glimpse of independence was not just exciting for them but also a proud moment for us as educators.

This excursion was a wonderful blend of fun, learning, and independence. It was inspiring to see our students engage so enthusiastically in every activity and support each other throughout the day.

MIDDLE & SENIOR SCHOOL

IESC Graduation, Term 4 2023

Mrs Gayatri Unsworth, Head of Language Acquisition Faculty

The Intensive English Support Class (IESC) programme at AISM has made notable advancements in 2023.

It has consistently and continually evolved to support and foster the development of AISM students from non-English speaking backgrounds, guiding them towards proficiency and confidence in English communication.

Earlier this term, we bid farewell to two students, Jin Ishizaka and Sayuki Tsukamoto (Year 8) upon their graduation from the IESC programme. Both learners have demonstrated commendable and steady progress since joining the programme in 2022 and 2023 respectively. We take immense pride in their growth and individual achievements, particularly in terms of language acquisition.

The Principal and Head of Middle & Senior School, Mr. Brooks, recently presented graduation certificates to Jin and Sayuki in acknowledgement of their accomplishments during their time in the IESC programme.

The IESC Teaching Team, comprising of Ms. Devi, Ms. Rose, Ms. Dawes, Mr. Webster, Mr. Kennedy, and Mrs. Unsworth, extends their best wishes to Jin and Sayuki as they continue their learning journey here at AISM.

Ishwarya Devi Krishna - Among the top composers

Matthew Fisher, Head of the Arts

Ishwarya Devi Krishna in Year 12 has distinguished herself as one of the top young composers studying the Australian Curriculum after her Higher School Certificate (HSC) composition ‘Township’ was nominated for ‘Encore’. ‘Encore’ is a showcase of the top musicians, performers and composers undertaking the HSC who are nominated by external HSC examiners from Australia. This is an elite list of students judged to be at the top of their field.

Ishwarya’s piece was composed for a full orchestra (with some changes such as addition of euphonium) and lasted for four minutes. It came from the HSC topic: ‘Music of the 20th and 21st Centuries’, with a focus on the Film genre. In January, a final list of twenty performers and/or composers will be selected for the showcase concert at the Sydney Opera House. Congratulations Ishwarya on getting this far. It’s great recognition for your skill and dedication.

Cultural cooking class in LOTE

Kai Lin Hor, Chinese Teacher

In this week's Chinese class, students embarked on a distinctive culinary experience as they actively engaged in crafting Tang Yuan, a traditional Chinese dessert.

As we celebrate a one-year milestone, enjoying Tang Yuan takes on a special significance. With each bite of these traditional Chinese sweet dumplings, we not only savour the delightful combination of glutinous rice and flavorful fillings but also reflect on the journey of the past year.

Throughout this journey, students not only enriched their vocabulary related to Chinese characters but also understood the importance of preserving traditional culinary techniques and cultural heritage.

Going beyond a mere indulgence, this class heightened students' understanding of the Chinese language and culture, fostering a sense of unity and fellowship within the classroom.

Careers Research Project 2023

Chris Broadbent, Careers and Pathways Coordinator

From 20 to 24 November 2023, our Year 10 students embarked on an exciting journey as they participated in the AISM Careers Research Project, commonly known as 'Work Experience.' This initiative allows our students to step into the world of work and gain hands-on experience in various industries and professions.

During the week, our students took on the role of young trainees, immersing themselves in real work environments and taking on a wide variety of responsibilities under the guidance of professionals. The tasks undertaken by our students varied based on the specific industry or workplace they were placed in. The aim was for our students to gain a deeper understanding of different industries, broadening their perspectives and equipping them with practical knowledge that complements their academic learning.

Our students embarked on placements in a wide variety of industries. Some worked alongside legal professionals in law firms whilst others shadowed doctors and healthcare practitioners at Gleneagles Hospital and Sunway Medical Center. A few students developed their customer service skills in cafes and restaurants such as Yeast and Croutons. Meanwhile, other students worked in grocery stores, accounting firms, oil companies and even FIFA.

For Mr Webster and myself, it was a pleasure to travel around the Klang Valley this week meeting them in their various work placements and finding out what they have been up to. We are all immensely proud of our Year 10 students, they are a very special group of young people, and we are so excited to see what they will achieve over the next few years.

We also extend our thanks to all the placement providers who generously welcomed our students into their workplaces and supported Year 10 on their learning journey.

Chinese and French role play at the market

Stephanie Rajani and Kai Lin Hor, French and Chinese teachers

This week, French and Chinese students applied their classroom learning from Term 4 in a practical setting. The focus of the lesson was on Food and Drinks. During their LOTE class, they brought in samples of both French and Chinese cuisine, and each item was labelled with its price in both French and Chinese.

Working in groups of three, the students engaged in a simulated market activity. They took on the roles of sellers, offering their food and drinks for sale, and buyers, making purchases from other stalls. This activity required them to utilise both languages to inquire about prices, express opinions about the food, and complete transactions.

Additionally, the students became acquainted with the euro currency. To simulate real-world transactions, they used "fake euros" to buy their chosen items and practised giving correct change using a foreign currency. This experience provided an excellent opportunity for them to apply their language skills in a practical context, reinforcing their understanding of the topics covered in class.

Great Eastern 12km Run 2023 - Yen Kei Ooi (10W)

Selina Murphy, Teacher

On Sunday 19 November, Year 10 student, Yen Kei, completed her first 12km run organised by Great Eastern 2023. With all of her hard work and training she finished 6th overall out of 217 runners in her category of Women's Open (16-34 years old) Malaysia, with a chip time of 1 hour 06 mins 25 seconds. What an achievement! We are super proud of her for taking part and doing so well! Congratulations Yen Kei.

WHOLE SCHOOL

AISM Certainly Does ROCK!!

Matthew Fisher, Head of The Arts

Last Friday saw the AISM auditorium turn into a total rock festival. With a total of nine bands performing, covering from Year 4 in the Junior School to the recently graduated Year 12, this truly was a ‘whole school’ event. Staff even chimed in showing their talents and Mr Brooks rocking out his final number in front of the students on drums. Emceed by our newly crowned Arts Captains Ryan and Melynna, the crowd was pumping and the tunes were rocking, with everything from Twist and shout from the ‘60s, to the latest songs from Maneskin and everything in between. The show was broken up by a couple of very special ‘Shout Outs’ to AISM from Australian rock legends Air Supply and Diesel, really making the day something special. Thanks to the entire Arts team (staff and captains) for creating such an awesome event.

Seasonal Synergy: A Festive Fusion of Independent Reading and Cross-Subject Exploration in Term 4

Ms. Jaeshinthaa Kaur Uppal And Ms. Syakila Shaari, AISM Library Team

In Term 4, the library embraced a holistic approach to learning by integrating independent reading with cross-subject links, weaving together the enchantment of Halloween, the radiance of Deepavali, and the festive spirit of Christmas. Students were encouraged to explore a diverse array of books that not only aligned with their academic subjects but also resonated with the cultural themes of the season.

The library curated special reading lists, connecting literature to various subjects. For instance, Halloween-themed mysteries were linked to critical thinking and problem-solving skills in science and mathematics. Deepavali stories not only delved into cultural heritage but also tied into history and social studies lessons, fostering a deeper understanding of traditions. Christmas tales served as a bridge to language arts and creative writing, encouraging students to express their own holiday narratives.

Independent reading sessions became a dynamic opportunity for students to enhance their comprehension and vocabulary while exploring interdisciplinary connections. The library, adorned with festive decorations, provided a cozy environment for students to immerse themselves in books that not only expanded their knowledge but also enriched their understanding of the subjects they were studying.

In this way, the library in Term 4 became a vibrant nexus where independent reading and cross-subject links converged, offering students a unique and immersive educational experience that extended beyond the pages of their textbooks.

Here is a sneak peak of some newly arrived books;

AIMS Cross Country Carnival

On 15 November, AISM took 31 students and 5 staff to the annual AISA Games in Saigon.

Many of our students played 3 different sports over the 3 days of highly competitive and highly skilled sport against equally talented opposition. Our students were pushed to the limit as they juggled different games and skills - but they persevered and did us proud!

We performed exceptionally well over the 3 days in all of our sports and considering we were also competing against schools that are 3 times our size makes it a mammoth achievement.

I would like to congratulate all students who competed for AISM and behaved exceptionally well both on and off the field. These students served AISM proudly. A big thanks goes to the coaches of the teams who have put in many hours of coaching throughout the year. Kudos team AISM!

Sporty Girls Netball

The AISM U9 & U11 Netball teams participated in the Sporty Girls Netball Tournament on Saturday 25 November. It was a highly competitive event which included teams from the local schools/clubs. The teams played an awesome defensive game and capitalised with some fabulous shooting. Our players were resilient throughout the tournament and tried their very best to be competitive in each game. It was extremely encouraging to see our players being respectful to the opposing teams and umpires during the event, reflecting the AISM R.E.C.I.P.E values. Credit to Ms Chaplin, Ms Janett and Ms McNarn for coaching the girls. Well done AISM!

In Appreciation

Dale Wells, Head Of Department PDHPE

The PDHPE Department, on behalf of AISM, would like to recognise and thank the Hart Family who recently made a very generous donation to the school. We now have a fabulous new Cable Machine for weight training at AISM. This new machine enables students to perform weight training in a safer environment.

Coach Hussein and Coach Zul are in the process of developing training routines that will be placed in the weight room for students’ reference. Once again, on behalf of the PDHPE Department and the AISM community, I would like to express my heartfelt gratitude to Mrs Michelle Hart for her unwavering support of AISM and its students.

Sporty Girls Netball Tournament

James Unsworth, Deputy Head of MSS

The AISM 13&U Netball team participated in the Sporty Girls Netball Tournament last Saturday (25 November). There were nine 13&U teams, divided into two pools. Our girls went through their pool undefeated and looked amazing doing it. The girls had consistently excellent defence, quick passing and great movement off the ball. Unfortunately, a few umpiring decisions didn’t go our way and in two matches this meant that our girls ended up with a draw, rather than a win. This meant that, whilst the AISM Roos were the best in their pool and the only undefeated team, they finished second in the group, missing out on the Gold medal game against the winner of the other group. Nonetheless, AISM was proudly represented by a wonderful group of Middle Schoolers and ably led by team captain, Cherish Wang. It was a great day out for this amazing team and we look forward to seeing what heights they might reach in 2024!

Mathematics

Mrs Tanya Fisher (Head of Faculty - Mathematics), Ms Nor Rashina Hyrat Ali, Mr Raymond Pollock, Mrs Jennifer Bunn and Ms Malini Nageswaran

As we reflect on the academic year, we are delighted to share with you the exciting array of resources and programs offered in mathematics at the Australian International School Malaysia in 2023.

1. Mathematics Competitions:

We have actively encouraged student participation in various competitions to foster a spirit of healthy competition and to challenge their mathematical abilities. Opportunities such as the SASMO, KLJMC (and now Senior: KLSMC), Kangaroo Mathematics Competition, APSMO, AIMO, and several offered by the Australian Mathematics Trust have allowed our students to showcase their talents on the international stage, of which many have gained the highest awards.

2. Acceleration and Extension Program:

Our commitment to providing challenging opportunities extends to the Acceleration as well as the Extension Program. The Acceleration Program offers students the unique opportunity to complete their Higher School Certificate in Mathematics Advanced one year early. There are many benefits to this and any Year 8 or 9 student with a growth mindset and a willingness to work hard is invited to apply for this program. The Extension program has continued in Years 6 & 7 and enriched the learning of our students.

3. Number Ninja Program:

AISM has implemented a successful numeracy improvement program, 'Number Ninjas,' specifically designed for our Middle School students. This program has proven highly effective in reinforcing foundational mathematical skills aligned with the content taught in class. It is heartening to witness the positive impact of Number Ninja on our students' confidence and competence in numeracy.

Future Opportunities:

Looking ahead, we are pleased to announce that due to the resounding success of these programs, AISM is committed to continuing our support for students at all levels. We have signed our students up to continue accessing digital platforms and online learning and tutoring tools, such as MathsOnline, again for 2024. Our goal is to foster a culture of learning and improvement in mathematics for the pure joy of it, catering for all learning styles and engaging with modern technology. We appreciate your ongoing support and partnership in nurturing a passion for learning within our school community.
