PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

Aaron Wise, Principal

Welcome back to Term 2 of the school year! It’s always exciting to see our campus buzzing with the energy and enthusiasm of students and staff, ready for the challenges and opportunities ahead. A special welcome to the new families joining us this term – we are delighted to have you as part of the AISM community.

At AISM, learning never stops, not even during the school breaks. Our students continually demonstrate their passion for growth and discovery, embodying our philosophy of lifelong learning – the idea that learning and growing are natural parts of life, extending beyond the classroom and school hours.

Over the recent break, many of our students took part in enriching experiences that highlight this spirit:

  • A group of our students participated in the Reef Conservation Dive Trip in Borneo, exploring the underwater world and contributing to vital conservation efforts.
  • Model United Nations (MUN) practices continued as students prepared to represent their peers in meaningful global discussions.
  • Talented students showcased their skills in table tennis competitions, displaying dedication and sportsmanship.
  • And of course, our hardworking Year 12 students spent the break balancing assignments and exam preparation as they focus on achieving their academic goals.

These activities reflect the heart of our educational philosophy: learning doesn’t end when the school bell rings. Whether through academic pursuits, sports, community engagement, or personal passions, our students embrace opportunities to learn, grow, and make a difference.

As we embark on this term, let’s continue to nurture this spirit of curiosity and growth together. Term 2 promises to be filled with exciting events, meaningful learning experiences, and achievements to celebrate.

Here’s to another wonderful term of discovery, connection, and success!

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Michelle Chaplin, Head of Junior School

Welcome to Term 2 AISM. The first week has seen our students arrive back with big smiles and an eagerness to “Get to Work”.

There is much excitement as we focus on our swimming program from next week, culminating in our Junior School Carnival at the end of term.

Our Preparation class is full steam ahead with their early literacy program, and Foundation to Year 2 are moving forward with the InitiaLit reading and writing program - amazing how quickly they are progressing and growing their skills.

Malaysia is renowned for its multicultural diversity, and the traditions and celebrations that flow from the jigsaw of people living in Malaysia. This week, our Year 5 leaders celebrated Hari Raya during lunch with various activities for students to engage in to better understand this celebration. Next week, the student leaders will coordinate our Easter Egg Hunt for the Junior School and then on Friday, we will commemorate ANZAC Day - a very special day for Australians.

AISM is definitely an International School where all cultures and traditions are valued and appreciated!

Year 3: Reflecting on a Wonderful First Term

Mr Jeremy Cox, Ms Jaesinthaa Kaur & Miss Vaneisha Madhavan, Year 3 Teachers

Term 1 was a vibrant and exciting start to the year in Year 3, filled with creativity, collaboration and curiosity. From building connections through art to exploring cultural diversity and mentoring our Foundation buddies, our students embraced every opportunity to grow as learners and as individuals. Here are just a few highlights from a fantastic term:

DNA: Dreams, Needs and Abilities

Early in the term, students completed a reflective art project titled DNA: Dreams, Needs and Abilities. Each child expressed their aspirations (Dreams), what helped them thrive at school (Needs) and their personal strengths (Abilities). This powerful activity aligned with Relationships, one of our school’s 5 Mindsets. The finished artworks were vibrant, meaningful and unique.

Zentangle Art

Students were introduced to the calming and creative practice of Zentangle art. This technique uses structured patterns to form intricate designs, offering not only a chance to develop artistic skills but also an opportunity to practise mindfulness. The process helped students focus and slow down, and their final artworks were a testament to both creativity and careful attention.

Inquiry: Celebrations Around the World

Our Inquiry unit for the term focused on cultural celebrations around the globe. Students researched and explored traditions from different countries, gaining a deeper understanding of how festivals bring people together. They learned to recognise both the similarities and differences between cultures and reflected on why these celebrations are meaningful to the communities who observe them.

Foundation Buddies: AISM’s 25th Birthday Mural

A highlight of the term was working with our Foundation buddies to create a mural celebrating AISM’s 25th birthday. Year 3 students paired up with their younger friends to design and construct sections of the mural. Some students painted, others used coloured paper, and several traced famous landmarks such as the Petronas Towers and Sydney Opera House. The mural also featured native flora and fauna from Malaysia and Australia. It was a joy to see the older students guiding and encouraging their buddies, and we are looking forward to more shared activities in Term 2 as part of our new Inquiry unit on the cycles of the living and non-living world.

We were incredibly proud of how our Year 3 students approached Term 1 with enthusiasm, care and a genuine love of learning. We look forward to the term ahead

AISM Mathematics Teachers Create The Best Engineers!

Ms Tanya Fisher, Head of Mathematics

Term 1 was packed with excitement in Mathematics! To mark Pi Day on 14 March and celebrate the International Day of Mathematics, homerooms decorated doors with creative tributes to the circle. Students also collaborated to build a Pi chain, representing its infinite decimal places, while Foundation students explored the concept of circles with a special visit from the Maths department.

A special shout-out goes to our Year 11 and 12 students who excelled at the KL Senior Mathematics Challenge Day at Gardens International School. They showcased their mastery in Calculus—especially Integration, demonstrating our Mathematics teacher’s expertise in training young engineers.

Congratulations to Natalie Ooi, Hyuna Oh, Michelle Wang, Ruoti Liu, Hayden Fisher, Phillip Mah, Derek Han, and Lucas Yip for securing 3rd place overall among nearly 40 teams from International Schools around Kuala Lumpur!
