The World Scholar’s Cup (WSC) is a major global academic competition. Students work in teams of three through four events: Team Quiz; Debating; Essay Writing; and, a Multiple-Choice Examination. These four events test the students in six subject areas, on information mastered from an extensive body of content supplied by the WSC. Teams participate in two divisions: Junior (under 14) and Senior (over 14).
Over the weekend of the 27-28th of April, the AISM Scholaroos competed in the Kuala Lumpur Round of the WSC. Between 700 and 800 of the best and brightest students from Private, Public and International Schools across Malaysia, as well as a number of schools from Hong Kong and Vietnam. AISM was represented in 2024 by 30 Scholaroos.
At this event, the Scholaroos achieved mind-blowing results. Generally speaking, having one student from one’s school make the top five overall scholars, across the combined events, would be considered an outstanding achievement. In 2024, two AISM students finished in the top five of the Senior Division. Even more astounding, these two students finished 1st and 2nd overall in this year’s event. Aneesha Pollock of Year 11 received the honour of first place overall, whilst Jasmin Unsworth of Year 10 received the honour of second place overall.
Further, in the most rigorous event of the competition, the Multiple Choice Examination or ‘Scholar’s Challenge’, two teams of Scholaroos also swept the top two positions, claiming the first and second positions in that event. The team of Iggy Jones, Aiman Akmal Hakim and Henry Yap finished first in the Multiple Choice Examination, whilst the team of Aneesha, Jasmin and Hyuna Oh finished second in the same event. Medals were also awarded for individual subjects in the Scholar’s Challenge and two AISM students received first place overall in one of the subjects. Jasmin Unsworth won first place in the Senior Division Art & Music test and Mackenzie Miller won first place in the Junior Division Art & Music test.
These truly exceptional results demonstrate the effectiveness of AISM’s dynamic approaches to learning and teaching, when measured against the best students of a range of excellent schools from around the country. What’s more, it is notable that the top two overall scholars, Annesha & Jasmin, both began their learning journey at AISM as three-year olds in the Early Learning Centre, so one can clearly see, in their all-around performance, the true value of an AISM and Australian education. Beyond this, the holistic nature of an AISM education and the strength and closeness of the AISM Community was also on show during the Scholar’s Show, the WSC Talent Quest. At the Scholar’s Show the entire Scholaroos team took to the stage to sing, dance and acrobatically perform the song ‘Mamma Mia’ to an audience of approximately 1000 in the Kuala Lumpur Convention Centre Plenary Hall, who enthusiastically joined in and unanimously expressed delight to the team following the performance.
