AISM 2025
Newsletter Issue 5 - Term 1

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

Aaron Wise, Principal

At the Australian International School Malaysia (AISM), we are committed to providing our students with pathways to success that extend far beyond our school gates. Each year, approximately 50% of our graduates go on to study at Australian universities, and we are proud to have alumni thriving at institutions such as Monash University, the University of Melbourne, and the Australian National University, among others.

As part of our ongoing efforts to strengthen the formal links between AISM and Australian universities, we are introducing new initiatives to better prepare our students for life after graduation. These partnerships aim to provide students with valuable insights into university life, enhance their academic readiness, and inspire them to pursue their passions.

Next week, our Year 11 and 12 students will have the opportunity to visit Monash University in Malaysia. This exciting day will include a campus tour, lunch, and hands-on workshops led by Monash staff from the School of Science and the School of Engineering. These workshops are designed to ignite curiosity and provide a taste of the innovative learning experiences that await them in university.

Workshop Highlights:

  • Cracking the Code of Life:

  • Led by the School of Science, this workshop introduces students to the world of pharmacogenetics and DNA analysis. Students will design a simple DNA extraction kit for fake blood and construct a DNA fingerprint profile for drug response research. It’s an engaging opportunity to explore cutting-edge scientific techniques.

  • The Art and Science of Deepfakes:

  • Hosted by the School of Engineering, this session will dive into the fascinating world of deepfakes. Students will learn about its applications, how the coding works, and ethical implications. Students are reminded to bring their laptops for this interactive experience.

These experiences not only provide students with insight into their future academic journeys but also highlight the strong connection between AISM and Australian universities. Through initiatives like this, we aim to inspire students to explore their interests, make informed decisions about their futures, and foster a sense of excitement about the opportunities that lie ahead.

As we continue to strengthen ties with Australian universities, we look forward to creating even more opportunities for our students. By bridging the gap between school and university, we ensure that our students are well-prepared, confident, and ready to excel in their next chapter.

IMPORTANT: Time to Switch to Your AISM 25th Anniversary Lanyard!

We’re excited to see our community embracing the AISM 25th Anniversary lanyards! If you haven’t done so yet, it’s time to swap out your old lanyard for the new one. These lanyards were distributed last month, and everyone—students, parents, and staff—is now required to wear them on campus.

If you haven’t collected yours yet, no worries! Just drop by your respective school reception to pick it up.

Here’s a quick guide to the lanyard colours for students, staff, and parents:

Thank you for being part of this special milestone and helping us keep our AISM spirit strong!

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Michelle Chaplin, Head of Junior School

Term 1 has quickly come and gone with much to celebrate - from academic achievements to sporting moments of glory and many other milestones throughout the term. Our Year 3, Year 4, and Year 5 students have survived camp, made some new friends, and further developed their independence and teamwork skills.

Our ELC students are fast becoming water safe and some are close to swimming a whole lap of our pool!

Our cutting-edge literacy program “ Initialit” in Foundation, Year 1, and Year 2 has been a hit. We are already seeing strong evidence of the rapid progress our students are making in Reading and Writing.

All round it has been a wonderful term for our students and certainly kicked off 2025 - our AISM 25-year birthday celebration - with excitement and set a cracking pace for the rest of the year.

Year 1 Adventures: Learning, Growing, and Exploring!

Miss Charlotte McNarn, Junior School Student Learning Coordinator

This term, Year 1 students have engaged in a variety of exciting learning experiences across different subjects.

A key highlight has been the introduction of InitiaLit, an engaging literacy program that strengthens students’ phonics knowledge and reading confidence. Through interactive lessons and structured activities, students are becoming more skilled and independent readers and writers! In English, learners have built on this foundation by exploring tricky words, digraphs, and sentence structure, bringing their learning to life through creative storytelling and hands-on literacy games. Each day, they are discovering the power of words—whether decoding new ones, writing their own imaginative sentences, or sharing their ideas with classmates.

Math lessons have focused on place value, skip counting, and measurement concepts such as length and capacity, using fun, hands-on activities to support their understanding. Through engaging group tasks and problem-solving challenges, students have learned to apply their mathematical thinking in real-world contexts, making connections between numbers and everyday life.

Inquiry lessons saw students compare family roles from the past and present, explored Malaysian seasons, and buried a time capsule to reflect on their Year 1 journey - They can’t wait to dig it up at the end of the year!

A key highlight of the term was the Ramadan assembly, where students confidently presented their learning. They showcased their understanding of this special time through songs, reflections, and performances, making it a meaningful and memorable event for all. It has been a productive and engaging term, and we look forward to more learning ahead this year!

Music in the Making: A Harmonious Start to the Year!

Miss Suhana Zainal, Music Teacher

The Junior School music program has had a fantastic start to the year, with students actively engaging in rhythm, melody, and music instruments. Across all year levels, students are developing their listening, performing, and ensemble skills while building a strong foundation in musical concepts.

ELC & Foundation – Exploring Sound and Movement

Our youngest learners have been discovering music through body percussion, movement, and hands-on exploration with percussion instruments such as egg shakers, claves, and other percussion instruments. They have been learning to identify high and low sounds, loud and soft dynamics, as well as rhythm patterns while developing confidence in singing. Their enthusiasm for music-making has been wonderful to witness!

Year 1-2 – Developing Musical Foundations

Year 1 and 2 students have been expanding their musical skills through singing and hands-on instrument work with glockenspiels and xylophones. They have also been introduced to aural skills, rhythm notation, and instrument families, helping them understand the different sounds and roles of various instruments in music.

Year 3 – Percussion and Theory in Action

Students in Year 3 have been refining their xylophone technique and rhythmic coordination on drum pads, while deepening their understanding of aural skills and music theory. Looking ahead to Term 2, they will begin learning the recorder, an exciting step in their instrumental journey.

Year 4 – Ukulele and Performance Preparation

Year 4 students have been making excellent progress on the ukulele, learning fundamental chords and strumming techniques. They are also developing ensemble skills as they prepare for an upcoming performance in Term 2!

Year 5 – Violin Studies Begin

Year 5 students have embarked on an exciting challenge - the violin! They have been developing their bowing technique, finger placement, and ensemble awareness as they begin their journey with violins. As the term progresses, we look forward to seeing students grow in confidence and musicianship. Music continues to be an essential part of their learning experience, encouraging creativity, collaboration, and a lifelong appreciation for the arts.

Stay tuned for more updates as we move through the year!

AISM Shines at the Live KL Senior Mathematics Challenge

Mrs Tanya Fisher, Head of Mathematics

AISM proudly showcased its exceptional mathematical talent at this year’s Live Kuala Lumpur Senior Mathematics Challenge, with over 40 teams competing from some of the largest international schools in the city. Our Year 11 girls' and team secured an impressive 3rd place in their category, while the Year 12 boys' team came in 2nd. Overall, AISM finished 3rd, beating several top international schools—an amazing achievement for our students!

Representing AISM were Derek Han, Lucas Yip, Phillip Mah, and Hayden Fisher, alongside an equally formidable girls' team of Hyuna Oh, Ruoti, Miaoxuan and Natalie Ooi. Competing against approximately 200 students from all over KL.

The competition featured five intense rounds designed to test various facets of mathematical ability. These included the Mathematical Meltdown, a warm-up session with rapid problem-solving challenges; Dragon Maths, an exciting race against time; the Proof and Logic round, which tested reasoning skills; the Integration and Graph Sketching segment, which challenged students with advanced calculus; and the Shuttle Round, the ultimate test of teamwork, where each correct answer propelled teammates forward in their problem-solving sequence. Unlike most other school systems, our students have only just started their academic year, but despite this, they performed well overall and both groups were particularly skilled in the Calculus section.

AISM’s outstanding performance in this prestigious event highlights our school’s commitment to academic excellence and its dedication to fostering a love for mathematics. Congratulations to all our competitors for their hard work and brilliant performances!

Year 6 and 7 Camp - Thistle Resort, Port Dickson

Miss Emilia Megroz, Middle School Pastoral Coordinator

Stepping outside their comfort zones, pushing through challenges, and working together—this year’s Year 6 and 7 camp at Thistle Resort, Port Dickson was an experience to remember.

Across the four days, students tackled high ropes courses, raft-building, and team challenges that tested their creativity, communication, and resilience. Whether problem-solving under pressure or supporting their peers, they showed determination and camaraderie - even in the face of the heat.

After activities, students cooled off in the resort pool and enjoyed time with their friends. Buffet meals at the resort also provided a welcome break each day, fueling students for the next challenge.

Evenings were a time to unwind and have fun; students enjoyed card games, entertaining talent show performances, a thrilling round of capture the flag and a K-Pop group dance challenge. Year 7s stepped up as leaders, confidently running several activities and doing a fantastic job to engage their peers. These moments of laughter and creativity were just as valuable as the daytime activities, allowing students to bond and enjoy each other’s company in a relaxed (and air-conditioned) setting.

A sincere thank you goes to the dedicated team of AISM staff who attended this camp and ensured everything ran smoothly: Ms Anna Wood, Ms Danica Dawes, Ms Sulawati Semail, Mr Azizul Ali, Mr Marshall Kennedy, Ms Rosemary Joseph, and Ms Jenn Bunn. Their support and energy ensured everything ran smoothly.

Whether celebrating a team victory, conquering a personal fear, or simply sharing a laugh over a meal, students embraced every moment with enthusiasm. We are incredibly proud of our students’ efforts and look forward to seeing them build on the skills and friendships they formed during their camp experience.

Year 8 Paradise Valley - International Award 2025

Mr Dale Wells, Year 8 Teacher & IA Leader

The Year 8’s trialled a new program this year for camp. The Duke of Edinburgh’s International Award. As such, the camp was very challenging for such a big group of students. However, the students were up to the task. During the trips, the students hiked approximately 38 km. The hot days and steep climbs were eased by the calming Jeram Kedah waterfall and the camp's swimming pool.

Students stepped up and took leadership of the hikes, supporting and encouraging each other. Fun activities included Kayaking, Cycling, Wall Climbing, Team Building games and Raft Building and Racing.

The students finished the last Hike Friday morning with determination and a sense of real accomplishment. Many claimed they were proud to be able to say they survived Year 8 camp. Thanks go to Ms Syuhada, Ms Azratee, Coach Zul and Mr Wells for their support.

Stage 5 Camp to Penang: Adventure, Challenges, and Unforgettable Fun

Ms Sarah Boam, Year 9 and 10 Pastoral Coordinator

The Stage 5 camp to Penang was an action-packed adventure that left Year 9 and 10 students with incredible memories. From thrilling rides to team challenges, the experience was a perfect mix of exhilaration and camaraderie.

Tuesday afternoon set the tone with high-energy banana boat and donut rides, sending students bouncing over the waves and laughing all the way back to shore. Wednesday’s highlight was Escape Penang, where adrenaline seekers took on heart-pounding rides and the infamous World’s Deepest Bucket—no one stood a chance when the water came crashing down! It wasn’t just the students who loved it; teachers also had a blast on the vertical waterslides and treetop rope courses.

Thursday pushed everyone out of their comfort zones with beachside team challenges, including the ultimate test—completing each task while still returning to the start with unbroken eggs. The competition was fierce, but the laughter and teamwork made it an unforgettable day.

Of course, no camp is complete without delicious food, and the buffet-style, beach-front meals ensured everyone was well-fuelled for the action-packed days. With a perfect mix of fun, adventure, and bonding, the Penang camp was a huge success, leaving both students and teachers with stories to tell for years to come.

Diving into Action: AISM Students Take on Emergency First Responder Training!

Mr Christian Ogle, Service Learning Coordinator

This past Saturday, March 8th, twenty of our most determined students put their skills—and stamina—to the test in the Emergency First Responder (EFR) Course. This wasn’t just any ordinary training session; it was an intense, hands-on experience designed to push them beyond their comfort zones. And they absolutely dove right in!

From performing CPR with precision to mastering the art of bandaging wounds and handling emergency scenarios with confidence, our students showed grit, focus, and an unwavering commitment to becoming lifesavers. The training wasn’t easy—it demanded quick thinking, teamwork, and the ability to stay calm under pressure. But the challenge only fuels our AISM students, and they rose to the occasion with enthusiasm and determination.

One moment they were practicing chest compressions; the next, they were handling simulated emergency situations with the kind of cool-headed confidence that would make even seasoned responders proud. The instructors put them through their paces, and by the end of the day, each student had proven that they had what it takes to step up in a crisis.

Now, equipped with lifesaving skills and an unshakable sense of readiness, these students are prepared to make a real difference—whether in the classroom, at home, or out in the field. Their dedication to this challenging course shows that they are not just learners; they are leaders, ready to take action when it matters most.

Congratulations to all who completed the Emergency First Responder Course! You’ve earned these skills, and the world is a safer place because of it.
