AISM 2024
Newsletter Issue 5 - Term 4

PRINCIPALLY SPEAKING

Aaron Wise, Principal

As 2024 comes to an end, we celebrate a year filled with remarkable learning, growth, and community spirit at AISM. From academic milestones to co-curricular achievements, our students have shown incredible determination and creativity.

This time of year also brings the joy of Christmas, a celebration of hope, generosity, togetherness, and goodwill. In our diverse community, events like the Christmas Singalong beautifully highlight the shared values that unite us—friendship, compassion, and celebration.

I want to take this opportunity to deeply thank everyone in the AISM community for their invaluable contributions this year. To our students, your curiosity, resilience, and commitment to learning inspire us every day. To our teachers and staff, your dedication to nurturing our students and going above and beyond to create a supportive and enriching environment does not go unnoticed. And to our parents, your unwavering support and partnership make all the difference in ensuring the success of our students and the school as a whole.

This year has been a team effort, and together we have created an environment where every individual feels valued, supported, and inspired to thrive. As we reflect on the achievements of 2024, let’s carry the spirit of collaboration, gratitude, and community into the new year.

Wishing everyone a joyous holiday season filled with peace, love, and plenty of well-deserved rest. Here’s to a bright and exciting 2025 ahead!

JUNIOR SCHOOL

Michelle Chaplin, Head of Junior School

2024 has come to a close and we are excited for what we have achieved, grateful for all the opportunities we have experienced and as always looking forward to the break to re-energise and refresh for 2025.

I pay tribute to all the Junior School staff for a wonderful year of academic excellence, of sporting excellence and incredible performances - from JS Assemblies to the bigger stage of “Hoodwinked” in Year 5. Our students have been offered many experiences to grow as young people who can make a difference in the world around them.

As we conclude the year, I thank the Junior School Leadership team - Leigh Janett, Jeremy Cox, and Charlotte McNarn for their commitment, diligence, and positivity in leading our Junior School through 2024 - they are an awesome team!

It is that time of the year when we farewell some of our families. Wishing you well in your future adventures, and we also farewell some members of our teaching team:

Mrs Cayli Russell - who has worked tirelessly with our Foundation Learners and in particular introduced our “Little Chefs” dinner!

Mrs Meg McTaggart - a fabulous two years - one on Year 2 and one on Year 4, where she has been invested in the literacy and Inquiry program for our students. Meg heads to Perth with her family. Wishing her and Ruby safe travels.

Mrs Nicki Taylor - Nicki has been our Junior School Music teacher for 3 years. Nicki has led our many musicals over the last few years - from “Rocktopus” to an “Egyptian who dunnit” and then this year “Hoodwinked”, alongside our many Assemblies and other performances. Nicki and her family head to Queensland, Australia with our best wishes.

Ms Alicia Lee - has been with us for 9 years and made an impact in many areas of the Junior School - from her time as an Assistant Teacher to our Mandarin teacher and more recently as our EAL teacher. Alicia has always put the students first and wanted the best for her learners, often spending extra time to help them lift their level of English. We wish her well in her future endeavours.

An Irish blessing as we send them on their way!

May you have warm words on a cool evening

A full moon on a dark night

And a smooth road all the way to your door

May the road rise up to meet you

May the wind be always at your back

May the sun shine warm upon your face

The rain fall soft around you

May your life be like good wine

Tasty, sharp and clear

And like good wine

May it improve - with every passing year

As we farewell our departing staff we look forward to welcoming our new teachers in the Junior School.

Sporty Girls Netball Tournament

Tamara Kerr & Charlotte McNarn, Netball Coaches

On Saturday, 23rd November, our Tuesday Netball CCA team proudly participated in the Sporty Girls Netball Competition. This event was an exciting milestone for many of our players, as it marked their first experience competing against other schools and playing under the guidance of professional umpires.

The competition was challenging, with teams showcasing impressive skills and determination. Despite facing tough opponents, our girls displayed outstanding teamwork, resilience, and a positive attitude throughout the tournament. Their hard work paid off as they secured an impressive third place in the U11 age group—a fantastic achievement for their debut outing!

This experience has inspired the team to continue honing their skills and aiming even higher. The girls are excited about upcoming competitions in 2025, ready to build on this success and grow as confident, capable athletes.

AISM Rocks 2024

Matt Fisher, Head of the Arts

WOW!! What amazing talent we had on show for AISM ROCKS 2024!!

On the afternoon of November 26, the AISM Auditorium turned into an absolutely pumping music festival venue.

The concert line-up included students from every year in the Middle & Senior School (Year 6 to 12) plus a special appearance from our Year 5 Junior School Rockers performing Katy Perry’s hit ‘Roar’. It was impressive to see so many bands performing who had never performed together before. Our ROCKIN’ future is certainly in good hands. There were even a few rockin performances from staff, including Mr Ogle, Mr & Mrs Fisher and a farewell sing-a-long song with the departing Mrs Ritchie.

2023 Graduates, Evann and Zara, returned with their band ‘Posseidons Toes’, showing that the Music Family of AISM continues even after you leave. Professionally hosted by our two Arts Prefects Jia En and Hayden, the afternoon ran seamlessly with additional audio and visual special effects supplied by Mr Keys, Yi Kheng and Ervin. This was such an amazing event to start bringing 2024 to a close. We wish our Year 12 Band ‘Hairey’ all the best for their musical futures, who knows, we may just see them for a return rockin' visit next year.

IESC Graduation Term 4 2024

Mrs Gayatri Unsworth, Head of Language Acquisition Faculty

The Intensive English Support Class (IESC) programme at AISM has continued to grow and develop over the course of 2024, welcoming students from a range of different non-English language backgrounds and supporting them closely as they increase their proficiency and confidence in English communication. Many IESC students commenced the transition process at different points this year and many more have graduated from the programme completely, signalling the strength and effectiveness of the IESC approach.

This week, we bid farewell to the following 17 students who will conclude their time in the IESC programme and begin the 2025 academic year as fully mainstream students. Congratulations to:

Kelly Zhang (YR6), Natalie Wang (YR6), Lucas Liang (YR6), Lisa Li (YR6), Owen Lau (YR7), Cindy Miao (YR8), Angela Qiao (YR8), Jiarong Lin (YR8), Henry Chen (YR8), Mandy Ding (YR9), Jonna Huang (YR9), Charlene Lai (YR9), Ria Jiang (YR9), So Yawata (YR9), Osuke Kida (YR9), Aika Kinouchi (YR9) and Feiyu Lin (YR9).

Earlier this week, the Principal and Head of MSS, Mr Wise, presented these students with graduation certificates to acknowledge their efforts and hard work in terms of their English language acquisition.

The IESC Teaching Team (Ms Rose, Ms Devi, Mr Webster, Mr Kennedy, Ms Emma and Mrs Unsworth) is immensely proud of these students’ achievements and individual successes in terms of their language acquisition. We wish all our IESC graduates the very best as they continue on their learning journey here at AISM.

KLMT Network Professional Development Conference

Tanya Fisher, Head of Mathematics

The first Kuala Lumpur Mathematics Teachers Conference was hosted at AISM last week, bringing together over 40 Mathematics teachers from across Malaysia, representing 34 different schools. Many of our Mathematics staff, along with our Head of Diverse Learning Needs, facilitated workshops, sharing their knowledge and expertise to benefit others and strengthen network support with teachers from other schools.

Feedback from the delegates was overwhelmingly positive, with many commenting on the value of the experience, and one group stating it was “the best professional development they have ever had.”

Congratulations to the Mathematics team for providing this valuable opportunity, not only for our own staff but for Mathematics educators across Malaysia. A special thank you to all those who contributed to the success of the day, such as our Facilities team, the Finance department and especially our very own supreme Administrator, Ms Azra.

French and Chinese Brunch

Ms Stephanie Rajani & Ms Hor Kai Lin, French and Chinese Teachers

Today, our Year 7 French and Chinese classes came together for an enjoyable cultural exchange called the French-Chinese Brunch Activity. This event was part of their Term 4 topic on food and provided an excellent opportunity for students to practise their language skills in a real-world context.

Students from both classes prepared traditional dishes from French and Chinese cultures, such as French croissants and tarts, and Chinese fried rice and spring rolls. The variety of dishes not only demonstrated their creativity but also allowed everyone to experience and appreciate the unique flavours of each culture.

A key feature of the activity was the marketplace simulation. Here, students used their French and Chinese language skills to interact with one another, buying and selling the food they had prepared. French students practised using Chinese, while Chinese students practised speaking in French. To add to the realism, students had to use fake euros, a currency they are not familiar with. This required them to adapt quickly to new situations, enhancing the immersive nature of the activity. It also gave them the chance to practise practical skills like mental arithmetic in a fun and engaging way.

This immersive experience made language learning come alive. By stepping into the shoes of marketplace buyers and sellers, students gained confidence in communicating, improved their fluency, and saw the value of their language skills in real-life situations. Beyond language, the activity strengthened bonds among students, fostered teamwork, and deepened their understanding of each other’s cultures.

Thank you to the teachers and students for their hard work in making this event such a memorable and successful experience!

Bon appétit! 开动了!

Cultural Cooking Class in Chinese Class

Tang Yuan, or glutinous rice balls, symbolises family unity and togetherness during the Dongzhi Festival, also known as the Winter Solstice Festival. This tradition is an important part of Chinese culture, representing family harmony and the arrival of longer days. Eating Tang Yuan also serves as a reminder that everyone is considered a year older, encouraging reflection on personal growth and better behaviour for the year ahead. Many Chinese people, particularly the older generation, continue to observe the tradition of recognising themselves as 'a year older' immediately after the Dongzhi celebration, rather than waiting for the Lunar New Year.

As part of their cultural learning, all students prepared two delicious traditional dishes, including Tang Yuan, and shared them with their peers. This activity gave them the opportunity to enjoy cooking while gaining a deeper understanding of the cultural significance behind the recipes.

Cultural Cooking Class in French Class

This week, the students turned their French class into a culinary adventure by making Petits Sablés. By combining language learning with a creative activity, they explored the history of these iconic French biscuits while practising their French. With flour, butter, and sugar at the ready, they carefully followed instructions written in French, skillfully mixing the ingredients to achieve the perfect sandy texture. The classroom was filled with the delightful aroma of baking, creating a memorable experience. The students left not only with improved French skills but also with a box of tasty biscuits and wonderful memories to share at home.

AISA Games Singapore 2024

Ivan Yoong, Whole School CCA & Sports Coordinator

On November 27th, AISM took 40 students and 5 staff members to the annual AISA Games in Singapore. Over the course of three days, many of our students competed in three different sports, facing highly competitive and skilled opponents. Our students were pushed to their limits as they balanced various games and skills, but they persevered and made us proud!

Throughout the event, we performed exceptionally well in all our sports. Considering that we were competing against schools up to three times our size, this accomplishment is truly remarkable. I would like to congratulate all the students who represented AISM, showing outstanding behavior both on and off the field. These students embodied the spirit of AISM with pride and sportsmanship. A special thank you goes to the coaches, who dedicated countless hours to training throughout the year.

Kudos to Team AISM!
