Year 11 Biology Students Excel in Field Study

14/11/2024

AISM TEAM

Fieldwork can present unique challenges, especially when it takes place in the dense and complex environment of a rainforest. This year, the Year 11 Biology students at the Australian International School of Malaysia (AISM) faced these challenges head-on during their recent field study.

The students applied their classroom learning in real-world scenarios, demonstrating their skills in various biological research techniques. They conducted transects and used quadrats to meticulously identify and catalog plant and animal species, a task that required keen observation and patience.

In addition to species identification, the students carried out soil testing, measuring nutrient levels, pH, and temperature to better understand the ecosystem’s health and dynamics. They also took atmospheric readings, focusing on CO2 levels, to assess the rainforest’s role in carbon sequestration. To complement these efforts, they measured luminosity in different areas to study how light availability affects the biodiversity and growth patterns in the forest.

Despite the demanding conditions, including heat, humidity, and the challenging terrain of the rainforest, the students persevered. They overcame these difficulties through teamwork, resilience, and the application of their theoretical knowledge. Their hard work culminated in an outstanding field study that not only enriched their understanding of biology but also highlighted their dedication and capability.

The Year 11 Biology students’ success in this field study is a testament to their hard work and the high-quality education they receive at AISM. Their achievements in the rainforest have set a high standard for future field studies, showcasing what can be accomplished with determination and a passion for learning.
