Students from Years 9 and 10 at the Australian International School Malaysia (AISM) recently stepped beyond the classroom for an inspiring visit to the University of Wollongong Malaysia (UOW Malaysia) campus in Shah Alam, Malaysia. Through hands-on workshops spanning technology, creative media, engineering and culinary arts, students gained valuable exposure to university learning while exploring future study options and career pathways beyond secondary school.
Hands-On University Learning for AISM Students
On Tuesday, 26 May, all Year 9 and Year 10 students from the Australian International School Malaysia visited UOW Malaysia for a day designed to introduce them to different areas of university study and potential career opportunities.
Rather than simply touring the campus, students took an active role in their university experience. They participated in a variety of interactive workshops covering Python coding, multimedia production, culinary arts and engineering.
These practical sessions gave students the opportunity to experience how different subjects and interests can translate into further study and future careers. From developing computational thinking through coding to exploring creativity through multimedia and culinary arts, each workshop offered a different perspective on the possibilities available beyond school.

Connecting Classroom Learning with Future Careers
At AISM, preparing students for the future goes beyond academic achievement. Career exploration and university preparation are important parts of helping students understand their strengths, interests and the opportunities available beyond school. Through exposure to different industries, university courses and learning environments, students can begin making more informed decisions about their future.
For students in Years 9 and 10, this is an important stage in their education. As they begin considering senior secondary subjects and future study options, experiences such as the UOW Malaysia visit allow them to see how classroom learning can connect with university programmes and potential careers.
These opportunities form part of AISM’s approach to future-ready education, encouraging students to ask questions, explore possibilities and understand that there are many different pathways towards their goals. By introducing career and university options early, students have more time to identify their interests and make thoughtful choices as they progress towards their senior years and life beyond school.
Building Confident, Future-Ready Learners
Throughout the day, AISM students approached each activity with curiosity and enthusiasm. UOW Malaysia staff also commented positively on the excellent behaviour and engagement demonstrated by our students.
Experiences like these help students build confidence in unfamiliar environments while developing important skills such as communication, collaboration, problem-solving and independent thinking.
AISM’s Australian Curriculum provides students with a strong academic foundation while creating opportunities to connect learning with real-world experiences. As students progress towards the senior years, they can continue their education through the New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC), an internationally recognised Australian qualification that provides pathways to universities in Australia, Malaysia and around the world.
Supporting Every Student’s Pathway Beyond School
University exposure at an earlier stage gives students time to discover what excites them and consider the subjects, skills and experiences that may support their ambitions.
The UOW Malaysia visit was therefore more than a day away from school. It was an opportunity for students to imagine what their next chapter could look like and begin making meaningful connections between what they learn today and where it could take them tomorrow.

At the Australian International School Malaysia, we help students explore their strengths, interests and ambitions while preparing them for opportunities beyond the classroom. Through career exploration, university preparation and the internationally recognised New South Wales Higher School Certificate (HSC), students are supported to make confident decisions about their future.
